The FYE committee is preparing for the coming January 2010 FIC orientation on 11th January 2010. We’re expecting more than 20 new students and this around, we’re going to do something different.

Instead of lecturers running the show, senior students from the July 2009 intake will be taking over the activities. We have 4 students who have agreed to take charge and we’re so excited to find out how things would turn out to be.

So with new students to welcome, new games to play and new people to run the show, what will it be like on 11th January 2010 at 2.45pm at B1-08-04?

If any of you existing FIC or RMIT students are interested to find out, just drop by. We’ll be delighted to see you!

In June 2009, all Taylor’s School of Computing students gathered at the Courtyard area at the Leisure Commerce Square (LCS) campus for a photo-taking session organized by the First Year Experience Committee of School of Computing.

Despite the blazing hot sun, students waited patiently for their turn for the photo session which went according to intakes. Some came in blazers, others wore smart casual while there are a few who insisted on being their most natural self (i.e. sleeveless round-necked shirts and slippers) despite the stipulated dress code. The photographers executed their tasks efficiently and professionally, never complaining and ever enjoying the pleasure of capturing the moment in film.

It has been five months since that day, and finally, the photos are uploaded to the FYE Picasaweb album. But soft copies are never a substitute for the feel and touch of photos in print. As such, the FYE committee will be developing the photos in 4R size on matte paper. The developed photos will be sold at RM5 per piece and it comes with a photo envelope for keepsake. In line with the community outreach objective of this year, all proceeds from the sales of the photos will be donated to a charitable organization.

Class of RMIT July 2009

Class of RMIT July 2009

The First Year Experience (FYE) orientation activity for the RMIT July 2009 intake was held on 26th July 2009 (Thursday) between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm at AX-21. Most of the newly registered students and three senior RMIT students turned up for this activity. The gathering started with a brief explanation on the FYE initiative and the introduction of SOCIT’s FYE committee members by Ms. Tan Ee Xion to the students.

After the briefing, Ms. Rohini conducted the ice breaking-cum-team building session with the “What’s That?” activity. During this activity, all of the students (including the seniors) were organized into four groups. The leader of the group came forward to choose a message egg. Every egg had the name of an object which were not to be revealed and the groups were to build the objects using the balloons provided. At the end of the game, the groups presented their work of art to Mr. Sean Lim for him to guess the name of the objects.

After that, Ms. Magdalene Chew told the students to write a brief reflection on what they’d like to achieve which were to be submitted on the following day before briefing the students on the English Placement Test. Ms. Selina Low then took over to introduce the FYE SOCIT blog, FYE @ Facebook, FYE SOCIT’s Photo Album and Taylor’s Computing Society (TCS) before Ms. Tan announced on the coming Paintball Event to the students. Two of the senior students who came for the orientation shared their experiences on life as a college student. They advised the students on the importance of time management, especially in completing the assignments.

Hello, Welcome!

The gathering ended with a feedback survey on the orientation activity by Ms. Rohini and a casual chit-chat session.
